Charges have been filed against a 28-year-old Glen Carbon man who police say was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed into another car in Alton Friday night, killing a teen and causing severe injuries to her mother. Zachary A. Shewmake is charged with two counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence.
According to the charging documents, count one is an enhanced charge which could result in 3-14 years in prison. That is the count that addresses the death of 17-year-old Grace Bustos, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The second count addresses the severe injuries to her mother, Meghan Bustos, who was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital with broken vertebrae and ribs.
