Weld County, CO – Authorities are warning residents about a sophisticated new phone scam that mimics legitimate bank fraud alerts, according to a post from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.
Officials said the latest report involved a victim who received a call appearing to come from their bank’s fraud department. The scammer “spoofed” the bank’s number, asked about a fake out-of-state purchase, and told the victim their account needed to be frozen.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scammer even read back the victim’s correct personal information—including their address, date of birth, and email—to appear credible.
