Special Olympics Texas Summer Games Bring Joy and Inclusivity to All

Where most sporting events are about who wins, there’s something refreshing about an event where sportsmanship and love of the game take precedence. Joyful laughter, beaming smiles and cheers of encouragement are the hallmark sights and sounds at any Special Olympics event. As an official partner and year-round sponsor, Toyota Motor North America is helping to keep those good vibes going strong.

This past May, Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) hosted the Summer Games in Melissa, its largest Unified Sports event to date. Featuring more than 2,500 participants, including 1,574 registered athletes, 112 Unified Partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities who participate with athletes) and 859 coaches and volunteers, the event was a testament to the positive spirits of everyone involved. Athletes competed in several activities, including athletics, cycling, gymnastics, soccer, tennis and FUNdamental Sports. These are individualized programs for athletes ages two and older who, due to physical and/or developmental abilities, are working on foundational motor skills to prepare them for possible competitions in typical Special Olympics events.

Special Olympics works year-round to provide sports training and athletic competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Not only do these athletes improve their physical fitness, but they also develop lifelong friendships with fellow athletes and find new connections with their families and neighbors…
