This Day in History: October 6, 1924: Civil rights leader Joseph Lowery was born

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – On October 6, 1924, civil rights icon Joseph Lowery was born.

Reportedly inspired by other leaders like Rosa Parks, Lowery led a boycott against the segregated bus system in Mobile, Alabama.

Called the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement”, Lowery was a Methodist minister during the 1950s in Mobile.

In fact, he was part of the group of southern ministers who met at Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Atlanta to form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference – a group that gave a clear direction to the Civil Rights Movement…
