Tuesday Time Warp – How Did San Jacinto Park Get Its Name?

In today’s Tuesday Time Warp, we take a quick look at how San Jacinto Park in downtown El Paso got its name. The park has been at its present location since at least 1859 when there was little vegetation and the park was surrounded by hitching posts for horses. An 1859 map simply labeled the park as a “public square.” By 1882, the park was already known as the San Jacinto Plaza.

But how did it get its name?

The El Paso Daily Herald from February 2, 1899, likely gives us a hint. El Pasoans were asked to choose a name “for the new city park on North Oregon street.”
