New Orleans’ leading mayoral candidates agree: Teachers deserve a raise — and the city should help pay for it.
At a forum last week, State Sen. Royce Duplessis and City Councilmember Oliver Thomas said they would back a tax or other measures to generate revenue to boost teachers’ pay. A spokesperson for City Councilmember Helena Moreno, the frontrunner in the race who did not attend the forum, said Moreno would “support a dedicated new source of revenue for teacher raises.”
“Our teachers ought to be paid like Zion Williamson,” Thomas said at Thursday’s forum, referring to the Pelicans’ star player. He added that he would advocate for teacher pay raises at the state level if needed, as well as support housing programs for New Orleans educators…
