Wichita City Council approves Ice Center repair, Starlite Drive In loan extension

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Wichita City Council approved repairs for the Ice Center at Tuesday’s meeting.

An ammonia compressor broke, and the center is down to one sheet of ice, which limits hockey and figure skating practices, games and tournaments. Over the past few years, the City has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in addressing issues at the center. The City already has pending litigation because of other equipment malfunctions.

The council extended a $200,000 loan for the Starlite Drive-In. The theater’s owner requests an additional six months to repay the money due to the financial difficulties caused by the summer storms. The owner has already had one extension and restructuring since Wichita first gave the drive-in the loan.

Also, the council approved additional funding for the Wichita Police Department’s Property and Evidence facility. The department will use $288,000 to meet storage and evidence handling standards. The money was recently returned from a previous project. Quotes have been coming in higher for elevator repairs, internet tech, specialized refrigeration, and storage components.
