School zone speed cameras considered

PUNTA GORDA — With approximately 180 days to catch speeders on camera, the Punta Gorda Police Department could receive an extra $421,200 in fines, according to a proposal being presented to the city.

At the Wednesday meeting, the board will discuss allowing speed cameras in school zones within the city.

Charlotte County recently approved cameras in 17 school zones. The Charlotte County Commissioners may establish a task force after learning 84 Cape Coral residents caught on speed cameras were wrongfully ticketed. The tickets were quickly dismissed, according to County Commissioner Bill Truex…
