FLOCK camera pilot program nears end, Charlottesville Police turn to community with results

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – One year after Charlottesville Police launched a pilot program for license plate reading cameras, the department is hosting the first of three community meetings Tuesday night to update residents on the trial’s results.

The automated license plate reader program, known as Flock, has sparked ongoing debate between those who see it as an effective law enforcement tool and privacy advocates who want the cameras removed entirely.

“We ended up developed what wound up being the most restrictive ALPR program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. And we found is we were able to do that and have a policy that is unique to Charlottesville and still be effective,” said Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis…
