In an effort to honor families of fallen police officers, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has expressed her backing for legislation dedicated to the creation of a commemorative license plate. The proposed Blue Star Family license plate, established under bills S.2449 and H.3811, will be issued by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles at no charge for family members of law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
With these new specialized plates, the state acknowledges the daily fears that haunt families of law enforcement officers, for whom the ultimate loss is a sobering reality. “Family members of police officers worry about their safety every single day. Blue Star families had their worst fears come true in losing their child, spouse, parent or sibling. We hold these families in the highest regard, and we will never forget their sacrifice,” Governor Healey stated, reflecting on the underlying purpose of the initiative. She has expressed her gratitude towards Senator Tarr, Representative Walsh, and the Blue Star families for ushering this bill forward.
