WINFIELD, Kan. (KWCH) – The federally funded food aid program for Women, Infants and Children, commonly known as “WIC,” could be threatened by the ongoing government shutdown. Some states say they have as little as two weeks’ worth of funding remaining for the program. In Kansas, the outlook isn’t so bleak, at least not so far.
In the Sunflower State, WIC officers say the program should be covered until the end of this month.
City-Cowley County Health Department Public Health Officer Tom Langer explained that WIC is operated differently, depending on each state, and in Kansas, benefits are paid back after the fact, not before.
