Grand Rapids Public Schools to break ground on new school on city’s northeast side

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids Public Schools will break ground Wednesday on a new school behind Aberdeen Academy, marking the first new school built on the city’s northeast side in six decades.

The 4:30 p.m. ceremony will include Mayor David LaGrand, state Rep. Stephen Wooden and district leaders. The public is invited to attend.

GRPS adds fourth school-based clinic as students return to class

The $36 million school will hold up to 450 students and is scheduled to open in 2027. Construction will not interrupt classes at the current Aberdeen Academy building, which was built in 1929.

The new building design reflects the school’s Redhawk mascot, with two classroom wings extending from a central hub that houses the gym and cafeteria.

When the school opens, it will serve pre-K through fifth grade students from Aberdeen Academy. Palmer Elementary students will move to either the new school or Kent Hills. Aberdeen’s sixth through eighth graders will attend the new middle school program at Innovation Central…
