Store employee disarms man, retrieves gun during Oct. 3 incident

VERO BEACH – A Vero Beach man remained in the Indian River County Jail on Oct. 8 on $66,000 bond, charged with charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and exhibition of a weapon in public from an Oct. 3 incident outside Wabasso Foods in the 6300 block of 85th Street, Vero Beach.

According to Indian River County Sheriff’s Office reports, Calvert Tyrone Allen, 62, of the 8500 block of 64th Court, Vero Beach, approached a couple sitting in lawn chairs next to a car outside Wabasso Foods at about 2:55 p.m., and ordered one of the women by gunpoint to go into the store.

Allen, who rode to the store on a tricycle, then went inside and ordered customers and employees to leave the store, while brandishing a firearm, according to an arrest affidavit.

An employee took a gun out of her purse, pushed Allen out of the store and fired two warning shots into the air, according to the arrest affidavit. The employee managed to take Allen’s gun from him, which she turned over to deputies when they arrived, according to the arrest affidavit…
