N.Y. (WETM) – NYSEG is asking the New York State Public Service Commission for a rate hike of 39.4% on natural gas delivery fees and 35% on electricity delivery fees. The PSC will accept public comment until October 24. If approved, the rate hikes go into effect on May 1, 2026.
NYS audit suggests Avangrid/NYSEG’s practices result in higher costs, worse service quality for customers
State lawmakers from the WETM 18News viewing area sent a joint letter to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, telling her to block the rate hikes. The letter also asked for an investigation into NYSEG’s finances and its “Smart Meters”, which are getting considerable criticism from ratepayers who feel their bills have gone up since the “Smart Meters” were installed, something NYSEG strongly denies.
NYSEG is required to hold public meetings to get input about the proposed rate hike. One was held in Binghamton on October 6, 2025. One is scheduled for Ithaca on October 7, 2025. The Assembly Member from the Ithaca area, Democrat Anna Kelles, is the only area state-level elected official who did not sign the letter to Gov. Hochul.
