The boxing world is mourning the passing of Arturo Gatti Jr., the 17-year-old son of the late legendary boxer Arturo Gatti. The World Boxing Association (WBA) confirmed the teenager’s death on Wednesday.

In a statement, the WBA expressed its condolences, noting that Gatti Jr.’s “journey was just beginning, yet his spirit will live on – now reunited with his legendary father among the stars.”

Chuck Zito, a former bodyguard for Arturo Gatti Sr., also confirmed the news, stating on social media that the younger Gatti was “found hanging in an apartment in Mexico.” Further details regarding the circumstances of his death remain unclear at this time.

Arturo Gatti Jr. had reportedly aimed to follow in his father’s footsteps, pursuing an amateur boxing career with aspirations of competing in the Olympics. He was less than a year old when his father was found dead in a hotel in Brazil in 2009.

Initially, Gatti Sr.’s widow, Amanda Rodrigues, was charged with murder in connection with his death. However, Brazilian authorities later reclassified the death as a suicide, and the charges against Rodrigues were subsequently dropped.

Arturo Gatti Sr. was a celebrated figure in boxing, known for his thrilling, action-packed bouts. Throughout his professional career, he amassed a record of 40 wins and 9 losses, holding both the IBF junior lightweight and WBC super lightweight titles. He is remembered for his epic contests against formidable opponents such as Oscar De La Hoya, Mickey Ward, and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
