MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — A strange sight greeted some residents on Dog River today.
Thousands of dollars worth of property stolen from Mobile home: police
Dead fish littered the shore of a private section of beach on Dog River while more floated nearby in the water. Though it seems like another Jubilee, an expert with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab feels it could be something different.
When shown images of the dead fish, Ronald Baker, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama and Senior Marine Scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, believes the fish could be menhaden.
“If I had to speculate, they appear to be mostly menhaden, which have been abundant in the rivers lately, and it’s possible the recent rain and runoff triggered a water inversion and hypoxia,” Baker said.
According to Baker, mass fish deaths are not uncommon after heavy rains follow a dry spell.
