New exhibition celebrates 16 women who shaped St. Pete’s mural scene

The Morean Arts Center (719 Central Avenue) will celebrate St. Petersburg’s street art culture with the opening of We Built This City: Women Artists of SHINE and The Shooters We Know: Curated by BASK on Saturday, October 11, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The reception invites the community to explore powerful expressions of creativity from dynamic mural work to striking street photography.

Celebrating 16 muralists who shaped St. Pete‘s street art scene

We Built This City: Women Artists of SHINE highlights 16 Tampa Bay muralists who have helped shape St. Pete’s public and street art scene through the SHINE Mural Festival. This exhibition recognizes the women who have brought color and character to city walls over the past decade, while also showcasing their work as studio artists. The featured artists include Alyssa Marie, Artist Jones, Elizabeth Barenis, Quinn Cale, Ashley Cantero, Jenipher Chandley, Dreamweaver, Amy Ilic-Volpe, Carrie Jadus, Nneka Jones, Cristi Lopez, Cecilia Lueza, Syd Bloom, Sara Salem, Nicole Salgar, and Sarah Sheppard.

Each year, the Morean Arts Center partners with SHINE to spotlight muralists who have contributed to the festival’s legacy. Since 2015, the SHINE® St. Petersburg Mural Festival—produced by the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance—has transformed the city’s walls into a world-class outdoor gallery, featuring more than 170 murals by local, national, and international artists. Through these murals, SHINE continues to celebrate creativity, inspire dialogue, and strengthen community connections through street art.

A new look at street photography in the heart of the Sunshine City

Alongside this exhibition, The Shooters We Know: Curated by BASK focuses on street photography that captures fleeting moments and architectural beauty within urban spaces. Guest curator and local artist BASK assembled the show to honor the photographers he has admired and collaborated with over the years. Featured artists include Detroit’s Sal Rodriguez, Los Angeles photographer Jeremy Deputat, and local talents Greg Bryon, Joey Clay, Tobin Green, Giancarlo Giusti, Amy Martz, Chloe Reyes, and Joe Walles.

“We’re excited and honored to be able to amplify the time and talent of the artists in these two exhibitions,” said Amanda Cooper, Chief Curator at the Morean Arts Center. “The show features our extraordinary Bay-area female muralists and the photographer-collaborators of longtime Morean member BASK, some of whom have never participated in a gallery exhibition before.”
