Report: Birmingham among cities where residents spend the most on groceries

A new study finds Birmingham is among three cities in the U.S. where residents spend the most on groceries.

According to WalletHub, Birmingham residents spend 3.28 percent of their median monthly household income on groceries. WalletHub attributed Birmingham’s high grocery spending to its low median household income of $44,376, the fifth-lowest in the country. Birmingham has the 10th-most expensive potatoes in the nation, along with the 22nd-most expensive soft drinks. However, overall, its grocery prices are not that high. In fact, it’s one of the least-expensive cities for corn flakes, detergent and shortening.

WalletHub reports grocery prices continue to rise across the United States, driven by inflation and supply chain issues, such as the bird flu affecting egg supplies. A recent analysis by WalletHub examined the cost of 26 common grocery items in 100 of the largest cities, comparing these costs to the median household income to determine where residents spend the highest percentage of their income on groceries…
