MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — King tides flooded several streets in coastal areas along the Grand Strand from Cherry Grove to Pawleys Island Thursday morning.
Kings tides, also known as perigean spring tides, occur several times a year and are caused by the gravitational alignment of the Earth, moon and sun, especially when the moon is at its closest point to Earth during a full or new moon.
They can cause significant flooding in many coastal areas and are expected to continue for the next couple of days.
When the tide is higher than 8 feet, areas between 48th and 46th avenues south in North Myrtle Beach might begin to flood, with some roads covered in water. Cherry Grove will also be impacted between Sea Mountain Highway and Hog Inlet, along with north and south Dogwood Drive in Garden City.
