Iowa man charged with detonating bombs at municipal golf course pleads guilty

A Des Moines man arrested for detonating and planting improvised bombs at Waveland Golf Course in July has pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and a felony.

Michael James Valento, 41, was originally charged with five crimes, including four felonies, after police said he detonated one pipe bomb at the golf course on University Avenue on July 3, and a second, live device was discovered by golfers on July 10.

The charges included two counts of possession of an explosive or incendiary device with intent, a Class C felony; first-degree arson, a Class B felony; third-degree arson, an aggravated misdemeanor; and being a domestic abuser in possession of a firearm or offensive weapon, a Class D felony, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

Court records show Valento pleaded guilty on Sept. 25 to the two lesser counts of possession of an explosive device or explosive material, both aggravated misdemeanors, and to being a domestic abuser in possession of a firearm or ammunition, a Class D felony.
