Man charged with DUI in Murrells Inlet crash that killed St. James aide had been drinking since 6 a.m., warrants show

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A man charged with DUI in the crash that killed a St. James High School aide told troopers he had been drinking since 6 a.m. that day, according to arrest warrants from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Camerino Antonio Hernandez was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in a death and driving without a license, third or subsequent offense. He is being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Troopers said Hernandez was driving a 2007 Chevrolet van that went off the right side of the road and hit Elizabeth Coss, 60, late afternoon on Sept. 30 while she was walking south near Starbuck Lake Road in the Murrells Inlet area. Hernandez was taken to Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital after the incident and then booked into the jail shortly after 9 p.m.

After the crash, when he was being treated by EMS, a trooper noted he had bloodshot eyes, his speech was slurred and his breath smelled like alcohol, warrants show. While at the hospital, Hernandez told another trooper that he had been drinking since 6 a.m. that day…
