Over 140 Inmate Deaths Reported at Amarillo’s Clements Unit

Amarillo has a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Prison (TDCJ), a men’s prison located at 9601 Spur 591. The William B. Clements Unit opened in 1990 and is named after the former governor of Texas.

Over the last few months, the Clements Unit has been in the news. In April 2025, a former corrections officer was sentenced for smuggling meth into the prison. In August 2025, a former Clements correctional officer and another guard were convicted of drug smuggling into the prison.

Just recently, two correctional officers were arrested for manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide after they reportedly failed to render aid to an inmate who set fire to his cell and later died.
