AUSTIN, Texas — Several Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) personnel were recognized for their bravery and lifesaving efforts during the October meeting of the Public Safety Commission at DPS Headquarters in Austin. The awards were presented by PSC Chairman Stephen P. Mach and other officials, including DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin.
Trooper Ivan Brightwell, of Winnie, Texas, received a Director’s Citation for his actions on May 14, 2025, when he arrived at a crash scene in Chambers County. An SUV had struck the rear of an 18-wheeler and became lodged underneath it. Trooper Brightwell used a prybar to help gain access to the injured and trapped driver, allowing first responders to provide emergent care, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Corporal Erick De Leon, of San Antonio, Texas, was also awarded a Director’s Citation for his exceptional dedication throughout 2024 in both criminal interdiction and emergency medical response. His efforts included seizing significant amounts of drugs and weapons, conducting investigations, and making numerous arrests.
