SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Two local nurses are now inventors after coming up with a way to improve patient recovery after chest surgeries.
The Sternum Protect may look simple in nature — a cushion attached to some straps — but its purpose could lead to a lot of good for patients who have gone through procedures like open heart surgery that cause sternal incisions.

“With hospitals worldwide right now, they use blankets, folded up blankets or pillows to splint your surgical incision when you cough, when you laugh, when you sneeze because there’s a lot of pain with it due to the pressure,” Amanda Rollag, inventor of the Sternum Protector, said.
However, Amanda Rollag says oftentimes a patient will forget to use that blanket or it’ll fall on the ground and get dirty which can lead to infection. The Sternum Protect is something a patient can just wear and have on them 24/7…
