It seems that using self-checkout in stores is doing more harm than good, as many videos have surfaced online showing employees harassing customers about the items in their carts. Most often, they ask if customers have actually scanned everything they’re purchasing and demand receipts as proof. In fact, a recent case involved a woman in Maple Valley, Washington, who believes she was racially profiled during a grocery run at a local supermarket. She recounted what happened in a video she uploaded on TikTok, which included footage of how the incident was handled.

Racial profiling! It doesn’t matter how old you get… it still hurts! 🙏🏾 I spent over $200 on groceries at our local grocery store. (Hints the receipt in my hand) And there are not many black families in that area. So, we stick out. My children are constantly being harassed and watched every time they are in the store. Even accused of stealing. I thought long and hard if I was going to post this video… because I don’t like getting out of character but somebody’s gotta speak out. I had just got out of church, picked up my 11 year old from her friends house and went to the store to get stuff for dinner and decided to just go grocery shopping for the week. This Safeway barely has any regular lanes open. So, I go through self check out… I scan and pay for all my items and my daughter bags up as I go. As we’re getting ready to walk out, a worker walks up to my basket, opens up one of my grocery bags and tries to accuse my daughter of stealing ice cream! SMH 🤦🏾♀️ After I kindly embarrass him by showing him proof on my receipt that I purchased the ice cream, he tries to say..well you didn’t scan the bacon! 🤦🏾♀️ At this point I could feel myself getting upset. I told him how dare you open up my grocery bag, I could’ve had personal items in my bag and to get away from my cart as he was racially profiling us, as we were the only black family in the store, meanwhile all these Caucasian people looking at us crazy. Which is making me even more upset! And I’m trying my best to hold my composure, in front of my child. Because when I go off, then I’ll be looked at like the “angry black woman”! (Yall know how that goes)! 😒 I leave the store & I put my groceries in the car. I decided to go through my bag that he opened and accused my daughter of bagging up ice cream & bacon that he said I did not pay for. I was scanning fast, so I wanted to confirm that I paid for it. Because mistakes do happen. Once I confirmed I did pay for my bacon. As tired as I was, I just couldn’t let this go. So, I go back inside the store to let him know racial profiling and false accusations of stealing was unacceptable and that I am tired of him harassing my family! Touching and going through my bag is also against the law. This type of harassment has been going on for years living here. Enough is enough. I think I need to speak to an attorney! How much can one person/faniky take!? Meanwhile I see Caucasian people of all ages stealing all the time, do you think they open up their bags or accuse them of stealing! Nope! It’s always “have a great day Bob”! Or “come again Susy”! Meanwhile they done stole $100’s of dollars worth of items but their too busy watching my lil “black family”! #Safeway do better!! Him stating: me Using the gun just looked suspicious is wild! Isn’t that what they are there for!? Yall created these self- check out lanes and gun scanners to make yall job easier (lazy)! Just to go around accusing minorminoritiesealing is nuts! The way he openly & confidently accused me of stealing, should’ve been the same way he extended his apology to me and my child, but he wanted to try to be quiet & discreet! No say it with yo chest! But at the end of the day he’s forgiven. Safeway train your employees to treat others how they would want to be treated. My money is green just like everyone else’s‼️ We are ALL one race!
