Weekend Digest: Police group says National Guard needed to help Charlotte, Researcher making waves in her work with sharks

Your weekend is here, Tar Heel State, and it’s time to take a look back at some of the stories that were in our headlines this week.

But the first, the forecast…

The weekend forecast is definitely looking wet and windy for much of central and eastern North Carolina. Low pressure is expected to develop off the Southeast coast of the U.S. today and then track up the Carolina coast through the weekend.

There will be a sharp dividing line across parts of central North Carolina between a wet weekend to the east and very little rain to the west. The Triangle and Sandhills could see some rain at times with totals less than an inch, while areas east of I-95 may see nearly two inches of rain or more.

Police group says National Guard needed to help Charlotte address violence

The killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska is once again drawing attention to staffing shortages at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, as the head of group representing the city’s officers calls for outside help. Daniel Redford, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 9, represents nearly 1,700 officers. In a letter to city leaders, he said he planned to request federal assistance — even suggesting the National Guard could temporarily support the department. Read more >>>
