University of Rochester investigates Medicare scam after local woman targeted by fake call

Canandaigua, N.Y. (WHAM) — The University of Rochester and Thompson Health are looking into an apparent Medicare card scam after a Canandaigua woman said she received a call from someone claiming to be from the medical center.

Jane McCarthy, who has been receiving frequent calls from the University of Rochester Medical Center since her minor stroke a few weeks back, said she was contacted early Thursday morning by a woman asking if she had received a new Medicare card. The caller ID indicated the number was from the university.

“She apologized and said it would be coming soon and asked me a few questions,” McCarthy said. “I gave her my Medicare numbers, my name, and the date I had started receiving benefits.”…
