ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The old Walmart building in the International District could be in store for a new future. After years of sitting vacant, Albuquerque City Councilor Nichole Rogers is once again pushing to fill the space.
The former Walmart is located on San Mateo Blvd. and Central Ave., but the retailer shuttered it two years ago. Councilor Rogers is now looking for the city to purchase that property. “So we are really grasping at all the straws to try to get the capital so that we can negotiate to purchase the vacant Walmart on Central and San Mateo,” said Councilor Rogers.

The City of Albuquerque’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency originally requested $2 million of capital outlay funds to buy the store. But with an asking price of $10 million, Walmart did not take the city’s offer. The retail giant shut down that location back in March 2023, saying it was “under-performing.”…
