Longtime KELOLAND anchor, reporter to retire

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – After more than three decades at KELOLAND News, we will be saying goodbye to veteran anchor and reporter Don Jorgensen. Don will be retiring at the end of November.

UPDATE: Rackley to serve 3 life sentences

Don Jorgensen joined the KELOLAND News team in April of 1990 and since then he’s covered many of South Dakota’s biggest stories from tornadoes and floods to historical political moments. He even took KELOLAND along with him as he served his country with the South Dakota National Guard in Panama and during Hurricane Katrina.

“The one that really does stick out to me though, is the Governor Mickelson plane crash because it impacted the entire state,” Jorgensen said. “I was the morning producer and anchor when that happened and I stayed awake almost all night, I couldn’t sleep knowing that I had to write the first line of the show that day and I struggled all night thinking, what am I going to say, what am I going to say? And then when I got to work and I sat down at my computer at four o’clock in the morning, it kind of just came to me — ‘words don’t come easy at a time like this.’”

Whether it’s tough news like that or light-hearted features, Don says telling the stories of KELOLAND has always been his favorite part of this job.

“I’m going to miss that aspect of being the anchorman,” Jorgensen said…
