BALTIMORE (WBFF) — The Baltimore Children and Youth Fund (BCYF) spent roughly $100,000 in taxpayer money on a civil rights trip for adults to Alabama last year, according to documents obtained by Spotlight on Maryland through public information requests.
BCYF received $16 million Baltimore City taxpayer dollars this fiscal year, money it is guaranteed annually to support local programs for kids. The organization operates as a nonprofit that relies on more than 99% of its funding from the Baltimore City government.
A document reviewed by Spotlight on Maryland shows BCYF paid Hemisphere Educational Travel $103,000 to organize a trip for 88 people to Alabama. Hemisphere lists an Alabama civil rights tour on its website for students, but BCYF said its trip was for members of its staff, board and grantees…
