Gov. Kay Ivey will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS) on Tuesday. The event marks a significant milestone for the state-supported residential specialty school, which aims to equip the next generation of healthcare professionals to meet Alabama’s healthcare demands.
ASHS, set to open in August 2026, will initially welcome its first freshman class at a temporary campus at the University of West Alabama in Livingston. The permanent campus in Demopolis is scheduled to open in August 2027. The school will be the fourth free, state-supported residential specialty school under the Alabama Department of Education.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the future site of ASHS, located next to Whitfield Regional Hospital. Joining Gov.
