Temporary closures at Prison Hill for drone herbicide application

Parts of Prison Hill will be closed to the public Wednesday, Oct. 15, 7-11 a.m., due to herbicide applications via drone to four one-acre areas, according to a news release.

The areas affected by the herbicide treatment are the 5th Street Trailhead (552 Carson River Road), 5th Street Loop Trails, Prison Hill East Trail and lower section of the Desert Peach Trail. Avoid these areas until the trail closure signage has been removed, the city said. Information on alternative recreation areas is at carson.org/trails.

“Prison Hill, among other locations in Carson City, is invaded by annual grasses, particularly cheatgrass. Following the 2021 wildfire on Prison Hill, staff have been diligently working to restore wildlife habitat and improve aesthetics for recreationists and onlookers — as the burn scar is highly visible from most locations in town,” the release said. “Following the fire, the area was aerially seeded with native and beneficial plant seeds to restore the burned area…
