NFIP Authorization Lapse Leaves Pinellas County Homeowners in Limbo Over Flood Insurance

The National Flood Insurance Program lost its authorization when the fiscal year ended last Tuesday, leaving new flood insurance policies and renewals on hold. In Pinellas County and other areas across the country, homeowners are affected by the suspension. According to the Pinellas County, residents in unincorporated areas previously received discounts of up to 40 percent on their flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program, but this benefit is now unavailable.

The Association of State Floodplain Managers has issued clarifications following the suspension. Although Pinellas County does not directly manage the National Flood Insurance Program, its coordination with the federal program has provided residents with significant insurance discounts.
