$12M contracts for state’s largest transitional family shelter keep 2025 opening in sight

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Approval of $12 million in construction and service contracts puts a transitional family shelter on track to open by the end of the year.

Construction of The Landing Place, soon-to-be Michigan’s largest family shelter with 80 rooms, is moving forward under a $1.38 million contract with Cornerstone Construction with a focus on an upgraded kitchen, dining area, indoor recreation and childcare space, according to Kalamazoo County officials.

“As we move closer to opening The Landing Place, our focus remains on families and creating a space built on dignity, safety, and the chance to rebuild,” Jen Strebs, chair of the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners, said. “From the beginning, we’ve put care into building this project around best practices – creating a place where families can be proud to stay, where they feel respected and supported, and a valued part of our community.”

The remaining $10.8 million, approved by the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 7, 2025, along with the Cornerstone Construction contract, will establish operations at The Landing Place for three years with Family Promise Inc., a national nonprofit that specializes in addressing family homelessness…
