UNL community members share concerns about budget process during hearings

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Academic Planning Committee, made up of campus members, held hearings this month for programs up for elimination or consolidation due to budget cuts.

The Lincoln campus is facing a $21 million deficit and looking for an additional $6.5 million in proactive cuts for a total of $27.5 million in reductions. University officials announced a potential plan to cut six programs and merge four others. Those up for elimination are:

  • Statistics
  • Earth and atmospheric sciences
  • Educational administration
  • Landscape architecture
  • Textile, merchandising and fashion design
  • Community and regional planning

Those marked for mergers are:

  • Entomology with plant pathology
  • Agricultural leadership, education and communication with agricultural economics

That plan also included $350,000 in reductions to the Glenn Korff School of Music and the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film that would eliminate one director position for a shared director, along with consolidating other positions in the two schools…
