Asheville considers event-based social district to boost downtown economy post-Helene

ASHEVILLE, NC. (WLOS) — A social district could be coming to downtown Asheville’s South Slope area. It would not be a typical social district, as it would be strictly event-based.

Hayden Plemmons, executive director of the Asheville Downtown Association, said the association was approached by city council members on the Planning, Economic Development and Environment Committee to propose ways to help the downtown economy. One of those ideas was an event-based social district.

In February, Plemmons said, they put out a survey about a social district, and 75% of the responses said they were interested. This laid the groundwork, Plemmons said, even though this is a different kind of social district…
