Grand & Big Rapids Exist—But No Small Rapids?

We have Grand Rapids and Big Rapids in Michigan, but is there a small or little rapids?

A recent Reddit discussion asked where the “Small Rapids” or “Little Rapids” are located in Michigan, and Michiganders had plenty to say about it.

Michigan Has A Few Cities That Have Rapids In Their Names

Michigan’s most recognizable city with ‘Rapids’ in its name is Grand Rapids, often cited in USA Today as one of the best cities in America, and the title ‘Beer City USA’ due to the amount of craft breweries in or near the city. There is also Big Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Eaton Rapids, Elk Rapids, Long Rapids, and Maple Rapids.

Let’s focus on Grand Rapids and Big Rapids. Given those names, why isn’t there a ‘Small Rapids’ or ‘Little Rapids’?”

Grand Rapids, Big Rapids, But What About Small Or Little Rapids?

There are many rivers with rapids in Michigan, and seven cities that end with ‘Rapids’ in their names. On the Grand Rapids Reddit page, a poster asked the question ‘Small Rapids?’ Many Michiganders had suggestions on what towns should be considered ‘Small Rapids’ or even a few funny names along the way.

Humongous is not quite the direction of ‘Small Rapids’, but still a funny name.

A poster on the Reddit thread suggested renaming Cadillac to Mid Rapids.

Another poster suggested Cadillac be renamed to Rapids, and Glen Arbor to Small Rapids…
