After 5 years, the Columbus statue in Syracuse hasn’t changed

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Monday is Columbus or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Five years ago, the City of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced that he had plans to move the Christopher Columbus Statue. Today, it’s still standing with no update on if anything will happen to it.

The board, the Heritage Park Advisory Committee, was created to help decide on what to do with Columbus Circle. It was made because of the vastly different opinions people have on Christopher Columbus and the statue. Hours and weeks of meetings were held with different community stakeholders.

The committee then decided that Columbus should be removed from the pedestal, but stay in Columbus Circle. That would not be the only statue there. That part would then be full of memorabilia and different statues of people who made a difference in Central New York history. This would then be called Heritage Park…
