‘Food forest’ in Newark park will offer fruit free for the picking

Folk Memorial Park is now home to a “food forest” made up of fruit trees and other edible plants.

For legal liability reasons, city officials were careful not to say the trees were planted for the purpose of human consumption. However, they confirmed that all the plants are something a human can eat, and that when the trees are ready to bear fruit, the fruit is free for the taking by anyone interested – whether that be wildlife or a resident visiting the park.

“We’re not saying it’s a place to come get food, but gleaning is not frowned upon,” said Herb White, parks superintendent for the Newark Parks and Recreation Department…
