Charleston Animal Society ends contract with county over TNR program cost dispute

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Charleston Animal Society will no longer serve as a contractor for Charleston County, effective Oct. 25, after ongoing disagreements over the county’s Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program.

The dispute, which dates back to 2023, centers on funding for feral cat spay and neuter services. On Sept. 25, the Animal Society’s CEO said the organization would not accept a new contract after the county declined to pay $467 per feral cat.

“We are very grateful to be receiving what we’re receiving at $95 per cat for stray community cats because it’s a crisis with thousands of cats out there breeding and having kittens,” said Carol Linville, founder and president of Pet Helpers. “They’re suffering, and we are thrilled that we can get them spay and neutered.”…
