CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — Voters in Chatham County began early voting Tuesday, and one of the items on the ballot is the renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
The 1% sales tax has been renewed by voters every six years since 1985. If approved again, it would fund local projects across the county, from road improvements to flood control to public safety. Chamber leaders said visitors will cover a significant portion of the costs.
Every time visitors buy a meal, fill up on gas or stay in a hotel, they are helping fund local projects. In fact, president and CEO of the Savannah Area Chamber, Bert Brantley, said visitors are expected to pay more than 40% of the total costs under this plan…
