Massachusetts man sentenced for data breach that impacted CMS, other NC districts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Massachusetts man was sentenced Tuesday to four years in federal prison for hacking into an education software company and stealing personal data from millions of students and teachers, including those in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and districts across North and South Carolina.

Matthew Lane, 20, was sentenced to 24 months on computer fraud charges and a consecutive 24 months for the data breach case. Lane is also ordered to pay more than $14 million in restitution, a $25,000 fine, and serve three years of supervised release.

Lane pleaded guilty to cyber extortion conspiracy, cyber extortion, unauthorized access to protected computers and aggravated identity theft in connection with hacking PowerSchool, North Carolina’s mandated student information system.
