Mayor hopes National Guard can help demolish blighted properties if deployed to Shreveport

The mayor has no new news on when or if the National Guard is coming to Shreveport, but now he’s saying he’s got work for them to do if they show up.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux says he’s spoken to the leader of the state’s National Guard twice about a potential deployment, though the details remain nebulous. The mayor is unenthusiastic about having guardsmen patrolling as crime fighters but now says he’d welcome their help tearing down blighted apartment complexes.

“If it turns out that the National Guard says ‘We can do this,’ I will ask for it. At the moment, I don’t have another solution to tearing down these apartments, and if I can get some state assistance to do something concrete that would be positive for the people of Shreveport, I’m going to ask for it,” Arceneaux said…
