Man donates hundreds of pumpkins to his former Salem elementary school

SALEM, Ore. (KPTV) – One man’s mission to spread kindness is filling classrooms with smiles and pumpkins.

Daniel Phillips once again delivered pumpkins to students at Englewood Park Elementary in Salem from which he graduated decades ago. It’s a tradition he started five years ago in honor of his third grade teacher, Mrs. Elwood, who he says taught him generosity and the importance of the holidays.

With budgets tightening, Phillips wanted to make sure every child could take home a pumpkin this fall, just like he wishes he could have as a kid.

“We grew up poor. We didn’t have much but the clothes on our bodies,” he said. “I figured this was a good way to come back and there’s a lot of underprivileged kids. To bring and see those smiles on these kids’ faces when they come down, it touches my heart.”…
