Red Devils’ Amaya, Tornadoes boys win at Southeastern cross country championship

MAXTON — The Southeastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship was held Wednesday at the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center in Maxton. Gerardo Marin Amaya of Red Springs was easily the first to finish in the boys’ race. His time of 19 minutes, 45 seconds was over a minute faster than Fairmont’s Nicholas Smithers, who finished second with a time of 21:04.

Overall, the Fairmont boys won the team competition, scoring only 32 points with an average time of 22:09. They had three runners finish inside the top 10 and eight finish in the top 20. Behind Smithers, Daquan Moore and Logan Locklear finished in seventh and eighth for Fairmont. Their times were 21:49.93 and 21:50.16.

Fairmont’s Tanner Hunt had a time of 22:49 to finish 11th. Parker Chavis and Noah Stone were 14th and 15th with times of 23:15, while teammate Noah Stone was immediately behind him at 23:15. Stanley Thompson and Braydon Locklear were 18th and 19th with times of 23:47 and 23:50. Geru Gaddy and Travis Sanderson had times of 24:00 and 25:34, placing them in 21st and 22nd for Fairmont.
