Toledo-born polar bear heading to new home for breeding program

CHICAGO — A polar bear born in the Toledo Zoo over a decade ago is preparing for a new adventure.

Siku, who was born at the zoo in 2009, will soon leave Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo for the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin, as part of a nationwide polar bear conservation program.

The 15-year-old bear’s move comes at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which works to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population of the threatened species. At his new home, Siku will help support breeding efforts crucial to the long-term survival of polar bears in human care…
