A Carol Stream man was arrested in conjunction with an ongoing financial scam.
According to a release from the Kewanee Police Department, on October 15, Kewanee Police, with assistance from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Kewanee Fire Department, Illinois State Police and Henry County Special Weapons and Tactics Team, conducted a controlled operation related to a financial scam investigation that led to the arrest of Shrey Patel, 23.
According to the release, an elderly Kewanee resident was contacted by individuals claiming to be agents with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The scammers falsely informed the victim that her financial accounts were in danger and that she could face criminal charges if she did notimmediately withdraw her funds. The victim then withdrew a large sum of money and gave it to the scammers prior to law enforcement’s involvement.
On October 14, the victim’s bank contacted the Kewanee Police Department after recognizing similar suspicious activity involving the victim. Bank personnel identified the situation as a potential scam and took immediate steps to protect the customer. Officers met with bank staff and the victim to gather details.
