Flood Evacuees get ready to spend the winter in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Red Cross says it’s preparing to help what could be as many as 2000 flood evacuees make it through the winter in Anchorage. On Friday, buses were still bringing people to the Egan Center downtown, one of two shelters the Red Cross is running.

“It’s certainly kind of in flux right now,” said Red Cross of Alaska CEO Tanguy Libbrecht. “But as folks are arriving, we’re just making sure that they have a place to stay, that they have a place to sleep, that they have comfort care, that they have food and all those type of things.”

Geraldine Amik was one of the people who spent Thursday night at the Egan Center after being evacuated from her village of Kipnuk with her husband and daughter. She said she was grateful for the hospitality she’s received at the shelter…
