Loudoun Mourns Teacher Who Died While Hiking

Loudoun County Public Schools is mourning the loss of Sugarland Run Elementary physical education teacher Todd Funkhouser after he died in a hiking accident this week.

Funkhouser was hiking on a remote area of the Billy Goat Trail at Great Falls Park in Montgomery County, MD, on Oct. 13 when he suffered a cardiac event, according to an obituary. He fell from a rocky area on the trail and was pronounced dead by medics from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, according to the United States Park Police.

“Todd was a cherished member of the LCPS family, having taught in various schools for the last 30 years,” LCPS spokesperson Dan Adams stated. “He was a beloved member of Sugarland Elementary School where he was the Physical Education teacher. We share in his family’s grief and are supporting them as they navigate this difficult time.”…
