Ohio mother sentenced to prison for dog attack that left infant dead

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Marion woman was sentenced to three years in prison after a dog attack last year that left her infant dead, according to the county’s prosecuting attorney.

Alyssa Smith received the maximum sentence for child endangering after her live-in boyfriend’s pit bull mauled and killed her 6-month-old infant on April 28, 2024, Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan’s office said in a release.

Grogan’s office previously said the attack happened at Blake Bates’ home on Miami Street when Bates left his pit bull near the unsupervised infant. The release said Smith left the infant unsupervised with a young child and the dog nearby…
